How to: Create your own color codes for cables

By 24. October 2022January 13th, 2023How to ..., WSCAD ELECTRIX

Cables contain separate wires and these wires can be labeled in very different ways. Some cables are numbered (1, 2, 3, …) and others have a color code (BK, BR, GY, BU, …) – depending on the norm.

Most numbering and color codes are included in the WSCAD software, so the cables can be easily placed correctly and in compliance with the norm.

But actually there are also special cables with unusual color codes that are not included in the WSCAD color code database.

That’s why the WSCAD software offers the possibility to extend and edit the color code list.

To create a new color code, navigate to the menu item Tools › Master data › Cable Color Codes

The color code editor opens, in which all already stored color codes can be displayed.

Click the New button and enter a name and the maximum number of wires for this color code. The entered number does not have to be identical to the number of the cable wires.

After clicking OK you can define the names of the individual wires, either as free text or as a code consisting of colors.

After configuring you still have to assign the color code to a cable in the part database.

Open the menu item Tools › Master data › Part management and navigate to the required cable.

Right-click on the context menu item Part › Change to open the properties of the cable.

In the “Encoding” field, double-click in the “Value” column and select the defined color code from the drop-down list.

Now, the cable is completely defined and can be placed in the schematics.

I hope you enjoyed the post and found it helpful.
